Cut Short the Common Cold – Natural Health Remedies for Colds

There’s a good reason it’s called the common cold, ‘cause it’s one of the most common illnesses around. And the worst part is that it has no cure. So if you have a cold, the best you can do is take adequate rest, dose up with warm liquids, and wait it out.

There are some doctors who may prescribe antibiotics to make sure you don’t catch other diseases when your immune system is down and others who give you cough syrups and lozenges to help you sleep better. But there’s nothing that beats the benefits of natural health remedies and concoctions to help soothe you and bring relief from runny noses and scratchy throats. The next time you catch a cold, here’s what you can do before running to the drug store:

  • Make yourself some ginger tea: Ginger has soothing properties – it raises your body temperature and helps bring down the severity of your cold. It contains various compounds that help fight against the virus that causes the cold.
  • Drink some elderberry juice: Or eat a slice of bread slathered with elderberry jam if you can summon up the appetite to eat. Elderberry is one fruit that contains active compounds that help reduce the symptoms of your cold as well as fight the cold and influenza virus.
  • Inhale peppermint oil or drink peppermint-flavored tea: Peppermint has properties that come in handy if you’re running a fever – it helps break the fever by making you sweat.
  • Use a cinnamon stick to stir your tea: Cinnamon is a spice that provides flavor and adds to the taste of your herbal tea. It also helps reduce inflammation and nasal congestion.
  • Gargle frequently: A solution of just salt and warm water can work wonders for an achy throat. Gargle at least thrice a day, before meals so that the salt doesn’t make you throw up.
  • Drink warm liquids: Hot drinks help soothe your throat and relieve nasal congestion. They also keep you warm if you’re running a fever.
  • Use a menthol salve: A dab of liniment can help you breathe easier and prevent sneezing continuously.

A cold may be common, but it’s nothing to sneeze at (pun unintended). It can drain you of all your energy and put you out of action for a while. So make sure you get plenty of rest, seek the help of natural health remedies, keep a box of tissues handy so that you’re up and about on your feet in no time.

Discover the Danger of an Acidic Body

Health and healing is based on the notion of balance. A person is in balance internally, when a balance exists between acid and alkaline. Acid alkaline balance in the body is the most critical balance in the body and is required to ensure proper health, energy, and vitality.

Why?

Because all the body’ s regulatory mechanisms including breathing, circulation, digestion and hormone product work to maintain the delicate internal acid alkaline balance.

In order that you may understand what is meant by an alkaline condition and an acid condition, think about vinegar (an acid) and lye (an alkali). Vinegar is acid in reaction, while lye is alkaline. They are directly opposite in character. If just the right proportion of these two products is brought together, a substance will result that is neither acid nor alkaline. Such a compound is said to be neutral.

As the acid substances increase in the body, the alkalinity decreases.

To better understand the relationship between acid and alkaline, know that there is a normal pH value in each body compartment (e.g., extra-cellular fluids, intracellular fluids, plasma).

You can measure the pH range in saliva and urine, but the blood pH is the most important indicator of the body’ s internal conditions. Just as our body temperature must be maintained at 98.6 degrees, the pH of plasma (pH of the plasma of the whole blood=conventional “blood” pH) is controlled at 7.4 (7.36-7.45). This range of 7.36 and 7.45 is vital to person’s well being. The body will go through great lengths to maintain the appropriate, slightly alkaline, nature of its internal environment.

Just as you feel sick or tired when your body’ s temperature changes one degree in either direction, if the pH range of the blood deviates too far to the acid side, oxygen levels decrease and cellular metabolism stops. In other words, cells die. The body dies.

When a body’ s pH becomes too acidic, it’s more vulnerable to degenerative diseases as bacteria and viruses are able to enter and thrive in an acidic environment.

Let’s see what happens when the body is slightly out of balance…

In the earlier stages of imbalance, small symptoms begin to show, such as headaches, allergies, aches, and back pains.

Why do you experience these symptoms?

Simple really…

Because body is trying to get rid of excess acid and it does it by trying to release acids through the skin, producing symptoms such as eczema, acne, boils, headaches, muscle cramps, soreness, swelling, irritation, inflammation, and general aches and pains.

Think about it…Do you ever have any problems when you feel you’re totally healthy? Let’s say you have been eating right, exercising, drinking plenty of water. Did you experience any of the symptoms mentioned above?

No, probably not.

And that’s because your body wasn’t too acidic and it didn’t try to get rid of the acid in any way.

Do you see what’s happening here.

You only feel sick and tired when your body is acidic. Reverse acidic body and you’re going to regain your health back I guarantee you.

You just really need to do it.

Ok, moving on…

Let’s say you didn’t want to change your lifestyle to a more healthier one and you decided to take bunch of medication to make yourself feel better.

Let’s see what happens than…

If you start to treat your symptoms, whatever they might be, with medications, pills, or antibiotics, the body becomes even more acidic than before.

That’s why when you take medications you can never totally relieve your problem because you’re not approaching the problem from the root cause you’re just covering up the symptoms with the medication. You may not feel the pain or discomfort for awhile or until medication wares off. But it returns as it always does.

As the imbalance continues to increase, more serious conditions arise, from obesity to all the major diseases such as heart disease, arthritis and cancer.

We are not a SICK NATION we are an ACIDIC NATION. They got it all wrong.

But on the other hand they probable don’t want you to get it right anyway.

Otherwise if you’re healthy then who is going to buy all their drugs and medications.

So they need sick people because they are their target audience.

In addition to sicknesses and diseases, recent research has shown that if you have an “acidic” body the aging process will be accelerated in your body, making it very difficult for you to retain a youthful appearance and a trim physique.

And don’t you want to look young and radiant?

I know for sure I do.

Let’s look at some other signs of the acidic body that so many people are experiencing today.

Signs and symptoms of an acidic environment inside the body include acid reflux, weight gain, diabetes, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), cardiovascular damage, including the constriction of blood vessels and the reduction of oxygen, premature aging, bladder and kidney conditions, including kidney stones, immune deficiency, acceleration of free radical damage, possibly contributing to cancerous mutations, joint pain, aching muscles and lactic acid buildup. Low energy and chronic fatigue, headaches, sinus problems, irritability, colds and flu are other symptoms of an over-acidic body.

Body is not intended to be on the acidic side that’s why it goes through great lengths trying to neutralize acid in the system using alkaline minerals.

But what happens when there are not enough of alkaline minerals in the body to neutralize the excess acid?

Here’s where we have another problem…

If more alkaline minerals are not supplied to the body to neutralize the acid, the body starts using available supplies from organs, bones, tissues and cells.

Let me give you an example…

Osteoporosis…Why does it happen in the first place?

When body trying to neutralize the excess acid in the system and can’t get enough alkaline minerals from foods you eat, it goes to the bones and starts to leach out calcium which is an alkaline mineral to neutralize the acid. Calcium deficiency in the bones increases making the bones weak and fragile. Result –> osteoporosis. They should have labeled it Acidic Bones Disease instead. At least it’s more descriptive and tells you exactly where the problem is.

Almost all diseases in the body caused by the excess acidity in the body. Correct that and you might be disease-free sooner than you think.

Garlic, a Natural Health Remedy for Catarrh

Garlic has been recommended by herbalists as a natural health remedy for catarrh for hundreds of years. Catarrh is excess mucus that the body produces as a result of inflammation in the nose and throat in response to a cold virus or hay fever which is known as allergic rhinitis.

Normally catarrh lasts only a few days while the body fights off the infection but in some cases it becomes chronic and results in headache, cough and blocked sinuses. While decongestant over the counter drugs can be used in the short term they can cause rebound catarrh when used excessively so garlic is a good natural alternative.

Garlic, a member of the allium family of vegetables, is one of the oldest known medicinal plants. We have been consuming garlic since Greek and Roman times for both for its strong taste and for its assumed benefits as a Natural Health Remedy. But reliable scientific studies have proven it has a significant number of health benefits.

Here are some of its known benefits:

  • can detox toxic metals – metals attach to the sulfur compounds and are eliminated
  • garlic sulfur compounds helps the liver break down cancer causing chemicals
  • lowers blood pressure a little.
  • lowers LDL Cholesterol (the bad stuff) a little.
  • helps reduce build up of arterial plaque
  • lowers or helps to regulate blood sugar.
  • helps to prevent blood clots from forming, thus reducing the possibility of strokes and thromboses.
  • helps to prevent cancer, especially of the digestive system, prevents certain tumors from growing larger and reduces the size of certain tumors.
  • is a potent natural antibiotic if used raw and can still kill some strains of bacteria that have become immune or resistant to modern antibiotics.
  • has anti-fungal and anti-viral properties.
  • dramatically reduce yeast infections due to Candida species.
  • has anti-oxidant properties and is a source of selenium.

So, what is it about garlic that makes it such a boon to our health?

When cloves are chewed, crushed or cut, they release a sulfur-bearing compound called allicin – the chemical that gives garlic its pungent taste and smell. And it’s the allicin that scientists have discovered is the magic ingredient thought to be responsible for garlic’s therapeutic qualities. Allicin is a very small molecule and can penetrate the cell wall. In effect. It prevents bacteria using the protein and enzymes they need to reproduce.

The famous American Herbalist John Christopher recommended placing a clove of garlic on each side of the mouth between the teeth and cheek at the first sign of a cold for it’s antiviral effect. The cold should disappear within a few hours or within a day avoiding the troublesome catarrh.

David Roser, director of the Garlic Research Bureau, claims that raw garlic will fix the most intransigent catarrh within a few hours. Add a clove or two to a salad. The finer the chopping and the more intensive the crushing, the more allicin is generated and the stronger the medicinal effect.

Allicin starts to degrade immediately after it is produced and its effectiveness decreases over time. Cooking speeds up this degradation and microwaving will totally destroy allicin. So for the most powerful medicinal effect on your catarrh as well as for other health benefits crush a little raw garlic and combine with the cooked food shortly before serving. But don’t overdo it. Garlic can irritate the digestive system in some sensitive individuals.

Cooked garlic is less powerful but is still beneficial. It has been suggested that organically grown garlic tends towards a higher sulfur levels which may be more beneficial. Some people prefer to take garlic supplements to avoid garlic breath. But for catarrh there is no finer Natural Health Remedy than garlic.
