Natural Remedies for Heartburn

Heartburn is the term that is used to describe a hot, burning or acid feeling in the middle of the lower chest. It usually comes on soon after a meal and can last for several hours. It has nothing to do with your heart although the pain can be so great that heart attack may be suspected. Other symptoms are nausea, regurgitation of food into the mouth and bad taste in the mouth.

Heartburn is also known as GERD (gastric esophageal reflux disease) or simply acid reflux. It is condition where the acid contents of the stomach refluxes from the top of the stomach into the esophagus where it causes a burning sensation and damage. The delicate lining of the esophagus, the tube that leads from the mouth to the stomach was never designed to come into contact with the strong acid of the stomach.

Many people take over the counter or prescription antacids or acid blocker medicine which they will take for years without giving a thought to the cause. They in fact are only masking a symptom of something more serious. Chronic heartburn is a serious condition to leave untreated because the constant irritation and damage to the esophagus can lead to cancer. So many prefer to seek out natural remedies.

  • Overproduction of stomach acid or lack of stomach acid (resulting in fermentation).
  • Large meals which put pressure on the sphincter at the lower end of the esophagus.
  • Obesity causes pressure in the abdomen which can cause hiatus hernia.
  • Pregnancy which also puts pressure on the sphincter.
  • Hiatus hernia where the stomach protrudes through a weakness in the diaphragm.
  • Yeast or bacterial overgrowth & fermentation in the stomach.
  • Delayed emptying of the stomach common in diabetes and when taking certain medications.
  • Incomplete clearing of the esophagus due to insufficient saliva caused by dehydration.
  • Slow movement of food down esophagus due to aging, medication or certain diseases such as Parkinson’s, scleroderma, MS.
  • Food intolerance- gluten or dairy intolerance are common causes but could be any food.
  • Smoking decreases the mucus barrier of the esophageal lining.

Self help remedies:

  • Poor diet choices are probably the biggest cause of overproduction of acidity in the stomach. Coffee, tea, alcohol and spicy foods increase gastric acidity. Also take care with citrus fruits and their juices and tomatoes.
  • Avoid high fat foods such as fatty meat, butter, pasta, sour cream, ice cream, mashed potatoes, chicken nuggets, buffalo wings .
  • Peppermint or spearmint can cause relaxation of the muscle at the top of the stomach so watch those mints.
  • Other food triggers include chocolate, raw onions and garlic, vinegar, black pepper, and carbonated beverage.
  • Eat small frequent meals rather than several large ones. Chew food well and eat slowly. Avoid eating late at night to allow your meal time to digest before you go to bed.
  • Stop smoking, try to reduce stress and lose weight

Natural Remedies for heartburn

There are a number of natural remedies that can soothe and heal the esophagus in combination with the diet changes above.

  • Aloe Vera Juice or Gel – take 1 – 2 oz three times a day 20 minutes before meals.
  • Licorice has anti-inflammatory and healing properties but look for chewable deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL)as it has had the glycyrrhizin removed that can cause blood pressure problems if taken over a long period.
  • A combination of marshmallow root powder and slippery elm bark powder in capsule form or taken as powder can be very soothing. Mix one teaspoon of each powder with a little water and take after meals.

Heart burn is a highly treatable condition and once you have your acid reflux symptoms under control you will likely find you can reintroduce some items back into your diet from time to time without experiencing any painful side effects. Keeping a food diary and making a note of any reaction should give you an idea of which foods are the worst triggers for you.

Natural Remedies for Vaginal Yeast Infections

Vaginal yeast infection is something that most women have had at some time in their lives. It is a very uncomfortable condition that is caused by an increase in the normal yeast that is present in the vagina. Doctors usually prescribe an anti-fungal medication that is taken by mouth or as vaginal pessaries (suppositories) but many women prefer to use natural remedies to cure the problem.

The yeast infection can be caused by a number of yeast organisms but Candida Albicans and Candida Glabrata are the most common. Candida Glabrata infections are more difficult to treat and are often resistant to many or the normal anti-fungal drugs.

The most common symptoms are a burning or itching sensation, redness, soreness of the vaginal or vulval area. A vaginal discharge may or may not be present.

The vagina is normally inhabited by a number of microorganisms that create an acidic environment. When the balance of these organisms is upset and/or the pH balance changes yeast can grow out of control and become an infection.

The things that can change the environment are antibiotic or steroid use, diabetes, weakened immune system, hormonal changes such as pregnancy, use of birth control pills and hormone therapy, frequent use of douches or female hygeine sprays. The infection can be passed back and forth between partners unless both are treated.

Many health practitioners believe that recurrent vaginal yeast infections are linked to Candida overgrowth in the bowel. If this is the case then treatment for intestinal yeast overgrowth will also improve the vaginal Candida.

Natural Remedies

A number of natural remedies can cure the infection without the side effects of drugs.

Pessaries (Suppositories)

Tea Tree oil vaginal pessaries (suppositories) have proved very successful for the infection. It is sometimes combined with lavender essential oil. Just be warned that Tea Tree pessaries can sting initially if you are very sensitive. Calendula and goldenseal or echinacea are often combined in a pessary as well. Use one pessary (suppository) every 12 – 24 hours for up to 14 days.

Garlic has anti-fungal properties and a whole clove of peeled garlic can be used as a pessary (suppository). Wrap in a small piece of gauze or fine muslin with trailing ends for easy removal. Dip in vegetable oil to lubricate before inserting into the vagina as high as possible. Use a new clove every 12 hours and continue treatment for at least 5 days.

Boric Acid

Researchers in several studies concluded that 600 mg boric acid suppositories or pessaries were just as or more effective in curing vaginal yeast infections than the drugs Fluconazole (Diflucan) and Itraconazole (Sporanox). Boric acid acts as an antifungal and antibacterial. Use 1 every 12 hours and continue for 7 – 14 days.

One company combines boric acid with a number of anti-fungal herbs and essential oils in a product called Yeast Arrest. Many women have found this a wonderful natural remedy for the cure of persistent infection with yeast. Just be aware that it can cause irritation and burning in a few very sensitive people.

Some practitioners recommend using acidophilus capsules in addition to the boric acid. In some cases it is possible for acidophilus to make the pH environment too acid for the good bacteria so discontinue if it is making the condition worse.

Although regular douching can alter the pH balance of the vagina and contribute to yeast overgrowth douching with anti-fungal herbs and other substances can be a useful health remedy against yeast infections.

Hydrogen Peroxide

Mix 1 teaspoon of ordinary 3% hydrogen peroxide from your chemist or pharmacy with 1 cup of water and use as a douche once a day until your symptoms improve.

Pau D’Arco Tea

To make the tea put 1 heaping tablespoon of Pau D’Arco Tea into a saucepan and add 1 quart (1 liter) of water. Bring to boil and simmer on lowest heat possible for 30 minutes. Allow to cool. Strain and use as a douche alternately with garlic tea. You can drink the tea as well. Keep any surplus in a lidded glass jar in the fridge.

Garlic tea

Garlic is a natural anti-fungal. Bring 4 cups pure water to the boil. Turn off heat and add 4 – 5 crushed cloves of garlic.Let steep for 20 minutes before straining. Allow to cool to body temperature before using.

Grapefruit seed extract

Make a douche solution with 6 – 10 drops to each cup of water.

How to douche

You can get various douche kits. The best ones consist of a bag or rigid container and a length of tubing with a clamp and douche nozzle. Many instructions tell you to use a bulb douche standing up but the solution will stay in contact with your vaginal tissues longer if you lie down in an empty bath and allow the solution to run in slowly. Any remaining inside you will come out when you stand up.

Hang the bag about 2 feet above the level of your pelvis. Always use the solution at body temperature and make sure you sterilize the douche nozzle and container afterwards with a natural sterilizer such as grapefruit seed extract.

Other tips

Wear only cotton panties.
Avoid wearing panty hose or tights
Wear skirts and not trousers, slacks or jeans.
Avoid wearing pajamas.
Follow an anti Candida diet.

Hemorrhoid Cure – Is there a natural remedy?

In a recent study on 60 people with various degrees of prolapsed hemorrhoids, researchers found that an ointment containing the natural remedy Smartweed gave relief to 50% of the sufferers. Smartweed, also known as Pepper Plant, contains natural adrenaline and hamamelis that cause the blood vessels to constrict and the piles to shrink. There are many other products on the market that are sold as a hemorrhoid cure but do they work?

Let’s have a look at what each of them do for the body, how they intend to treat hemorrhoids or piles, and raw truth on most of them.

Creams & Ointments

The first popular type of product that sufferers buy hoping for a hemorrhoid cure is a cream or ointment. These types of products are applied to the outer rectal area and are aimed at soothing the piles. They contain ingredients that help to relax the tissue so that it does not bulge out so much so the hemorrhoid will be less likely to flare up. Some creams contain steroid preparations which weaken the skin.

These are great for some temporary hemorrhoid relief but unfortunately it rarely provides a lasting cure. Your hemorrhoids are practically guaranteed to flare up again.

This next type of product is suppositories. One is inserted inside the back passage (rectum) which has a lubricating effect. They can help to relieve the pain, swelling, itch and irritation of internal piles. They should not be used for longer than 7 days as they can cause damage to anal tissue with longer term use. They work for some but not for others.

In some cases hemorrhoids are caused by increased pressure in the veins. Some doctors treatit with blood pressure pills to regulate the blood pressure. Once there is less pressure the vein may shrink and become less of a problem. All drugs have side effects and many prefer to find natural remedy.

More drastic treatments

None of these solutions tend to provide a true hemorrhoid cure and people turn to more drastic measures such as ligation (banding) or surgery. Ligation is where elastic bands are applied to the hemorrhoids to cut off the blood supply and it withers and drops off.

Surgical removal (hemorrhoidectomy) tends to be reserved for very severe cases as many complain about intolerable pain and discomfort for some time afterwards and even leakage after bowel movements.

New Natural Hemorrhoid Cure

Fortunately there is a new totally safe natural hemorrhoid cure that has already been tried out by hundreds of people. It amazing because it can work in just a few days. No wonder it is called the H Miracle System. The system includes basically everything you need to cure your piles once and for all. You can even get a free report. Click Here
