Celery Juice is a Natural Cure for High Blood Pressure

The fact that the frequent intake of fresh fruit and vegetable juices with a healthy diet can lower blood pressure has been known for a long time but a recent experiment showed that celery juice is a natural cure for high blood pressure.

Blood pressure is the force exerted by the blood pushing against the walls of the arteries as the heart pumps out blood. If the pressure rises above normal it can over time cause a lot of damage to your body. It can triple your risk of heart attack, increase your risk of stroke and can damage your kidneys and eyes.

Although various types of drugs can be used to lower blood pressure they have a variety of side effects such as fatigue, weakness, insomnia, cold hands and feet, chronic cough, dizziness, constipation , headache, dry mouth and many more that some people are not willing to tolerate. They turn instead to natural health remedies or natural cures.

Doctor’s experiment proves celery juice can lower blood pressure

The ability of celery to reduce high blood pressure has long been recognized by Chinese medicine. Some studies have shown that drinking celery juice every day for 1 week can help lower blood pressure. In a recent experiment using celery juice, a doctor from a well known alternative center in the USA resulted in her father’s systolic blood pressure (the top figure) reducing from 148 to 128 and her own from 120 to 105.

They both drank celery juice from one bunch of celery mixed with a little orange juice to counteract the bitterness that celery juice sometimes has, every day for a month. The fact that the frequent intake of fresh fruit and vegetable juices can lower blood pressure has been known for a long time but it was always presumed that it was the high intake of potassium, other minerals and antioxidants in the juices that did it.

Celery contains the compound 3-n-butyl-phthalide which relaxes the muscles in the walls of the arteries which widens them and allows the blood to fow more freely thorugh them. Pthalides also reduce stress hormones which can cause blood vessels to constrict.

In a previous post I wrote about the research that showed that beet juice is also effective for lowering blood pressure through the formation of nitrite which dilates blood vessels. So instead of sweetening the celery juice with orange juice why not try beet juice. The two make an ideal combination.

Other diet and lifestyle changes can help reduce high blood pressure:

  • Increase fruit and vegetables and whole grains
  • Reduce and preferable eliminate sugar and salt
  • Restrict animal fat
  • Eat more low mercury oily fish or take some Omega 3 capsules
  • Limit alcohol to one drink a day
  • Lose weight if overweight
  • Increase exercise – walking, swimming and cycling are good
  • Reduce stress – try yoga or meditation
  • Give up smoking

Although you would probably never think that celery juice is a natural cure for blood high pressure it seems that in combination with a health diet and lifestyle it can improve your health no end.

Ginger Juice – A Versatile Natural Health Remedy

Fresh ginger root juice has apparently formed part of the daily health regime that has contributed to saving the actor Patrick Swayze’s life. He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer earlier this year and given just 5 weeks to live. Ginger in both the dried and fresh forms has been used as a natural health remedy in Asia, India, and Arabia for thousand of years.

Ginger root is the thick knotted edible underground stem or rhizome of the ginger plant known as Zingiber officinale. The main active ingredients are the pungent compounds gingerol and shogaol. It’s is used around the world as an important cooking spice.

Ginger has many benefits as a natural health remedy. It has been used to aid digestion, for stomach upsets, colic, diarrhea, nausea and to treat arthritis and heart conditions for more than 2,000 years.

A second reason may be the fact that scientific studies have shown that ginger juice can help to detox the liver by increasing bile secretion.

A few animal studies have also found that components in ginger may have anticancer activity but more research needs to be performed to determine its effects on cancers in humans. A few preliminary studies suggest that ginger may lower cholesterol and prevent the blood from clotting so could be a useful remedy for people with heart disease.

Fresh ginger juice is often added to vegetable juices to give them a bit of a kick. It can also be added to the oil that is used for a liver flush. It can help disguise the taste of the oil that many people dislike and help prevent the nausea that some experience during a liver flush. The fact that it stimulates bile is an added benefit for this liver detox.

Try this tasty ginger juice detox cocktail: 3-4 carrots, 1/4 raw beet (beetroot), 1 apple, cored, 2 cups baby leaf spinach, 1/4 bunch parsley, 1 celery stalk, 1” cube ginger grated. Put all ingredients through a good juicer. Vary the amount of the ingredients to suit your taste and size of the vegetables. Serves 1 -2.

Broccoli Juice Beats Cancer

A British granddad claims that the natural health remedy broccoli juice is helping him beat bladder cancer. Mr. Ray Wiseman’s wife started making broccoli juice for him after doctors gave him little hope of survival when his cancer was diagnosed 5 years ago.

½ – 1 tsp chopped fresh parsley
A squeeze of fresh lemon juice.

Green juices and smoothies are loaded with vitamins, amino acids, chlorophyll and mineral such as iron and calcium. Vegetables and their juices are a great way to keep your body alkaline and flooded with oxygen. Cancer cannot thrive in these conditions.

A spokesman for Cancer Research UK said that there is a lot of research that is focused on broccoli and the healing properties of vegetables. There is plenty of evidence that the chance of developing cancer can be greatly reduced by a diet high in vegetables and fruit. Studies have found that boiling broccoli can reduce its anti-cancer compounds and that microwaving it destroys its antioxidant effects. Steaming briefly is probably the best way to cook it to preserve its natural heath benefits.

Beet juice – Benefits of Juicing Proven by UK Hospital.

Beet juice (beetroot in the UK) has been found to reduce blood pressure in a recent study at a prominent London Hospital. Researchers gave the volunteers half a litre (a little less than a pint) of beet juice to drink. The lowering effect on blood pressure was dramatic and was seen in 3 -4 hours after drinking the juice.

High blood pressure is a major risk factor for heart disease which causes 50% of deaths in Europe. Although figures have been reducing in the last few years 1 in 4 women in the USA still die from it

Practitioners of Natural Medicine have long known the benefit of fresh vegetable juicing on blood pressure. But previously it had been thought to be due to the potassium and antioxidants contained in the juices.

The current research revealed that the blood pressure lowering effect of beet (beetroot) juice was due to the nitrite that was formed from nitrate in the beets by the action of bacteria naturally present in the mouth. Nitrite causes blood vessels to dilate lowering the pressure.

Beet juice has traditionally been used as a natural health remedy to detox and build the blood. It contains betaine, a natural substance, that helps liver function. Professor Ahluwalia said “Our research suggests that drinking beetroot juice, or consuming other nitrate-rich vegetables, might be a simple way to maintain a healthy cardiovascular system, and might also be an additional approach that one could take in the modern day battle against rising
blood pressure”.
