Hypnosis – What It Is And What It Is Not

Hypnosis and its healing offshoot, hypnotherapy, have always been mired in misconceptions. Some consider them to be some sort of magic while others hesitate to even acknowledge them. Provided below are some general beliefs prevalent about hypnosis, and the real facts behind them.

Hypnosis has no link with any sort of mystical arts. It is a very easy technique, which can be explained easily with the help of psychology and other scientific methods. The genuineness of hypnosis is suspected even by people who have seen it casting its spell on subjects. They believe that the people who have been under hypnosis are mentally not strong enough to withstand the impact of the practitioner. But that is simply not the truth. Hypnosis can in fact work on people who are mentally strong and are trying hard to resist the spell.

That hypnosis is an altered state of consciousness is another misconception that has been circulating for quite some time now. A hypnotized individual is fully awake to what is going on in his surroundings. That person is just in a calm state where the attention spans are very high and the person can receive new inputs easily.

Some scientific findings have claimed that only about 5% of humanity is capable of being hypnotized, which is the third myth on this list. The researchers are somewhat true in their own way, because they attempted hypnotising their subjects by the same hypnosis technique without acknowledging individual differences in nature and disposition. People differ in their characters and personalities, and thus there have to be different hypnosis techniques to fit the temperaments of different individuals.

People also tend to connect hypnosis with meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a state of mind and generally has nothing to do with communication. The state of trance and the state of hypnosis are entirely different from each other too. Just like meditation, trance is a state of mind, and it is not linked with communication in any manner, whereas the very basis of the hypnosis technique is communication.

A sizeable number of people believe that it is impossible to bring about changes in one’s looks and behaviour through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is abnormal to the body. But it can bring about a development in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising inspiration levels in an individual.

Experiencing hypnotherapy is a fine way to lead a richer and satisfying life, and therefore one must not pay heed to the myths, and go for hypnotic sittings with an unbiased mind.
