Although you may avoid eggs because of the popular notion that they will increase your cholesterol levels researchers have found that eggs may be a good natural remedy to lower blood pressure.

Eggs can produce proteins that have a similar effect to drugs that lower blood pressure although more research is needed to show this effect outside the laboratory. Gout sufferers who want to avoid drugs have known for years that drinking large quantities of tart cherry juice can relieve the pain and inflammation of a gout attack in a few days. Nutritional factors:

  • Lead toxicity interferes with the ability of the kidneys to eliminate uric acid and leads to a type of gout. Plumbers who handle lead in their work can absorb lead which is toxic to the body. The use of a chelating lead agent such as liquid zeolite can help reduce lead levels.
  • Doses of Vitamin C up to 4 grams a day can reduce uric acid levels.

Psoriasis is a skin disease that has been considered virtually incurable by orthodox methods. Various external preparations such as coal tar, zinc pastes, vitamin D creams, ultra violet light and steroids are used with little real lasting success. So anecdotal reports of a natural health remedy such as turmeric offering relief from the unsightly and often irritating scaly red patches are very welcome. Benefits of turmeric

  • Do all you can to reduce stress.
  • Try standardized turmeric in capsule form without fillers. The recommended dose for psoriasis is 1.5 grams (1,500mg) in divided doses eg 500mg three times a day.

Look for improvement in your psoriasis in a month although a healthy diet has to be adhered to for life for lasting results. Turmeric for psoriasis is safe for most individuals but some people report nausea, indigestion or worsening of gallbladder disease with high doses long term.

Chilblains, Onion as a Natural Remedy

The extra cold weather in England this year seems to have brought an increase in cases of chilblains. It’s hard to believe that such tiny things can be so painful or intensely itchy unless you have experienced them. Chilblains usually occur on the toes but can occur on the heels, fingers, face and ears. In extreme cold they can also affect the legs.

Chilblains, also called pernio, occur as a result of the constriction of capillaries (small blood vessels) in the skin in response to the cold. When they are warmed up too quickly they expand more than nearby blood vessels causing blood to leak into the tissues.

They are more common in countries where it is damp as well as cold. They are more prevalent in people who have poor circulation due to smoking, Raynaud’s Disease, arteriosclerosis (narrowing of the arteries) or restriction of circulation due to tight socks and footwear.

Other factors contributing to chilblains are anemia, nutrient deficiencies, hormonal changes, certain drugs such as beta- blockers and damp living conditions. They are common in people who work out side or in cold conditions such as butchers.

They can be caused by warming your skin too quickly after coming in from the cold. For example warming your feet in front of a fire after coming in from the cold.

Chilblains appear red or blue and can be swollen. They can be very tender, itchy, feel tingly or burning and hot to the touch. In severe cases the skin may crack and there is the danger of infection.

Onion is a Natural Remedy

One of the most handy and effective natural remedies is to treat the chilblains with a cut onion. Gently rub the cut side of the onion over the chilblains twice a day. This can quickly relieve itching between the toes.

Some recommend dipping the onion in salt first. Don’t put raw onion on your skin if it is cracked or it is likely to sting. You can try a pulp made from cooked onion instead.

Prevention is better than cure.

  • A natural supplement of Vitamin E as mixed tocopherols 100 iu twice a day during the winter may help.
  • Take a good multivitamin and minerals with at least 25 mg of the B vitamins
  • Drink hot ginger tea and use ground ginger, chili and cinnamon in cooking to stimulate circulation.
  • Get checked by your doctor for anemia. Only take iron as a supplement if you need it.

If you have severe or recurring chilblains you should see your doctor who can make some checks on your circulation and rule out certain health conditions.

People with dark skin pigmentation may need 20 – 30 times as much exposure to sunlight as fair-skinned people to generate the same amount of vitamin D.

Secondly eat vitamin D rich foods. Its difficult to say how much you need because it depends on how much you get from the sun. Some experts say we need about 800iu a day and others recommend 1000iu or more. One 100g (3.5oz) salmon contains about 360 iu of the vitamin and an egg around 20 iu.

Just as you feel sick or tired when your body’ s temperature changes one degree in either direction, if the pH range of the blood deviates too far to the acid side, oxygen levels decrease and cellular metabolism stops. In other words, cells die. The body dies.

When a body’ s pH becomes too acidic, it’s more vulnerable to degenerative diseases as bacteria and viruses are able to enter and thrive in an acidic environment.
